Shelbyville, Ind. – The Transylvania cross country team completed its 2018 season on Saturday afternoon with one final race at the Great Lakes Regional at the Blue River Cross Country Course.
Pitting the best teams from the Great Lakes Region at the high-level race hosted by Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference neighbor Franklin College, the Pioneers were led on the men's side by freshman Jacob Burnam, who finished the men's 8K race in 27:55.8, and senior Rebecca Facktor for the Transylvania women, who ran the women's 6K in 26:29.8
Saturday's race served as the capper to 2018 for Transylvania cross country, and also allowed the Pioneers to compete against some of the best runners in Division III.
"The big takeaway for us today was just trying to get a lot of our freshmen and underclassmen experience racing at a championship level of this caliber," commented second-year head coach Taylor Throckmorton. "We have gone to some meets this year, even some bigger in size than today's, but a regional championship is its own beast. I was really impressed by how our athletes got out hard today and didn't shy away from a big stage."
Burnam's time was 171st in the field of 265 runners. Trailing Burnam was freshman teammate Chauncey Longman, who crossed the line in 29:18.9. Sophomore Darrell Corn wrapped up his sophomore year with a time of 30:05.7.
"One of the key points we've emphasized this season has been that we want our athletes to focus on what they can control and not worry about the extraneous details that surround them," Throckmorton added. "It felt like they executed really well today on a big stage, and I think it's one thing that shows how we've laid the foundation for our program to develop and improve over the next few years."
Freshmen Cassidy Kelien was one of the components of the Transylvania youth movement who finished off the season with a great run, finishing her 6K in 27:21.4. Sophomore Josie Cunningham also put an exclamation point upon her season with a time of 27:59.9 to round out the top-three finishers for the Transylvania women.
