Morton named NFCA Third Team All-American

Oklahoma City, Okla. – Transylvania softball senior pitcher Renae Morton has been selected to the NFCA Division III Third Team All-American, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday afternoon.

Morton, a senior from Olivet, Michigan (Olivet HS), was one of 15 players and one of three pitchers chosen to the Third team.

This is the first All-American honor for Morton, who earned her way onto the All-American Third team by producing one of the best pitching seasons in Division III softball in 2018, leading the nation in earned-run average during the regular season with a 0.53 ERA.

For the 2018 season, Morton pitched 150.2 innings, registering 183 total strikeouts against 24 walks, putting together a win-loss record of 19-7 while adding four saves.

The senior registered 17 complete games and nine shutouts, including a streak of six straight complete-game shutouts from April 6 through May 4. Her nine shutouts were second-most in the country during the regular season. Morton tied a single-game career-high for strikeouts with 14 against Franklin in a 10-inning complete-game win on April 10.

Morton tallied seven strikeouts or more in a game 15 different times during the 2018 season. The senior's 8.8 strikeouts per seven innings ranked 20th nationally during the regular season and ranked ninth nationally in hits allowed per seven innings.

Morton led a defense which ranked second in the country in earned-run average for the season and first in strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.53).

For her excellence, Morton was named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year for softball for the second consecutive season; her efforts translated to a 34-9 season for the Pioneers and their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

Morton was also named to the NFCA Division III All-Region First Team as a pitcher for her stellar senior campaign after being named All-Region Second team in her junior season of 2017.

Morton is the second Pioneer in program history to earn All-American honors, following former Pioneer infielder Megan Mitchell, who garnered Third Team honors in 2010.
