Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's basketball claimed its first victory of the 2017-18 season, prevailing 71-47 over the Otterbein University Cardinals in the first round of the Pat Deacon Classic at the Beck Center on Saturday night.
With the win, Transylvania draws even on the season with a record of 1-1 and moves on to the Championship game of the Pat Deacon Classic tomorrow afternoon.
Leading the way for Transylvania was senior forward Rachel Cox, who scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and blocked a shot in the Pioneers victory. Cox went 5-for-10 from the field including 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point line.
Cox's night from outside was one of numerous Pioneers exhibitions from three-point land on Saturday. The Pioneers shot 8-for-18 from behind the arc in the first half on the way to 12 total for the night.
The Pioneers seized control of the game early as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead just two and a half minutes into the game.
After a run by Otterbein pulled the Cardinals within two at 8-6, the Pioneers went on a run of their own that was capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from sophomore guard Shelby Boyle that extended Transylvania's lead to 22-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Pioneers continued to dominate the game in the second quarter thanks to some stellar defensive pressure that held Otterbein to just 33 percent shooting from the field. An efficient 11 points from Cox helped extend the Transylvania lead to 39-20 at the break.
A seven-point third quarter effort from junior guard Kristen Hayes helped the Pioneers extend their lead over Otterbein to 59-37 heading into the fourth quarter.
With the game safely in hand, Transylvania head coach Juli Fulks made use of her entire bench as the Pioneers coasted to a 71-47 victory over Otterbein.
Transylvania's defense held Otterbein to 20 percent shooting from three-point range. Additionally, the Pioneers dominated the glass throughout the game, outrebounding the Cardinals 42-27.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Pioneers as they face the Westminster College Blue Jays in the Championship game of the Pat Deacon Classic tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Beck Center.
