Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's basketball team collected its second straight win of the season, winning 61-54 over the Westminster College (Mo.) Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon in the Pat Deacon Classic championship game.
Senior forward Rachel Cox produced her first double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 14 points to go with 11 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
The Pioneers achieved the win on Sunday in comeback form, erasing a nine-point third quarter deficit to go back on top midway through the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.
Transylvania improved to 2-1 on the year while the visiting Blue Jays dropped to 3-2 overall.
The Pioneers opened up the game on fire, hitting four of their first nine 3-point attempts to surge ahead 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. Westminster jawed back into the game as the Pioneers missed 10 of their next 11 three-point attempts; the Blue Jays outscored Transylvania 18-9 in the second quarter to assume a 30-28 lead at the half.
As the second half began, Westminster found its three-point shot, hitting a pair of clutch treys to take a 41-32 lead at the 4:21 mark of the third quarter.
Junior guard Taylor Jackson answered with a strong drive and a triple, and senior forward Carlee Clemons knocked down a three to draw the Pioneers within three points of Westminster at the end of the third quarter.
Transylvania opened up the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run to take a 53-46 lead with 4:25 remaining in the quarter. The Pioneers rebounded well down the stretch while hitting on all 11 of their free throws attempts in the game to seal up a seven-point victory.
Sophomore guard Shelby Boyle added 11 points and three rebounds in the victory for Transy. Sophomore wing Ashton Woodard had 10 points off the bench and dished out three of Transylvania's 18 assists on the day.
The Pioneers return to the court on Tuesday, November 28 as they visit the Anderson University Ravens in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season opener for both teams. Tip-off between the Pioneers and Ravens is set for 7:00 p.m. from the O.C. Lewis Gymnasium in Anderson, Indiana.
