Transylvania women’s golf finishes in top-3 at season-opening tournament

Granville, Ohio - The 2017 season got off to a solid start for the Transylvania women's golf team, which placed third as a team at this weekend's Lynn Schweizer Invitational, hosted by Denison College.

Playing at the Denison Golf Club, the Transylvania women's golf team held a share of the lead at the end of Saturday's first round, before recording a third-place finish with a two-day score of 650.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was junior Meredith Moir, who shot a second-round 73 to finish with a two-day score of 154, good for a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard.

Junior Jenna Soderling carded a cumulative 158 on a personal first round-best six-over par 78 to come in sixth place.

The newest Pioneer, sophomore transfer Rachel Fine, shot a two-day 167 to come in third among the Pioneers and 16th on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Lexie Lamar had a solid outing with a 171, good for 22nd place, while Fine's sister Rebecca carded a 178 in her Transylvania debut to finish the scoring.

Head coach Tyrus York, in his second full season of guiding the Pioneers, was realistic in his praise and analysis of his team's first showing of the 2017-18 season: "We fought through some very difficult course conditions and still finished with one of our best scores ever. This team can be really good and if they keep working it will show by the end of the year."

Depauw placed first in the Invitational, 13 strokes ahead of Translyvania and five strokes above perennial power Wittenberg. Transylvania was the only team in the 13-team tournament to have two players finish in the top-7.

"Being tied for the lead after the first round in a tournament of this caliber was new ground for us but the girls responded well," added York. "They were outplayed by some very strong teams.  We finished seventh in this tournament last year and at that time it was one of our best finishes. Finishing third is a testament to the direction this program is going."

Transylvania will attempt to continue a string of good play as it looks forward to the NCAA Preview Tournament, hosted by Oglethorpe University at the Mission Bay Inn in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The tournament commences September 17.
