LEXINGTON, Ky.—An early lead for the visiting Otterbein University Cardinals was too much for the Transylvania University women's lacrosse team to overcome, as they fell 16-3. It was the Pioneers' final non-conference game of the season.
The Cardinals opened the game on a 3-0 run, scoring three goals in the first 4:15 of game action. Midfielder Iyabo Erinkitola halted the run with a goal of her own at the 19:08 mark. Erinkitola took a pass on the right wing and sprinted behind the Otterbein goal before coming around on the left side to beat the goalkeeper for Transy's first goal of the game, making the score 3-1. Otterbein would close the half on a 4-0 run however to push their lead to 7-1 entering halftime.
Otterbein opened the second half with another brief run to make the score 11-1 with 23:42 to play in the second half before attacker Julia Ward netted a goal just inside the 22-minute mark to bring the score to 11-2. Otterbein scored five unanswered goals however as the lead swelled to 15-2 but Ward netted her second goal of the evening with a breakaway score with seven minutes left in the game to draw the score to 16-3.
The Pioneer defense held strong, holding the Cardinals scoreless over the final eight minutes of play but the offense was unable to cut into the deficit after Ward's goal. The game ended with a score of 16-3 in favor of Otterbein.
Transylvania drops to 2-7 on the season. They return to action on Saturday in an Ohio River Lacrosse Conference contest against Mount St. Joseph at Pat Deacon Stadium with the game slated to begin at 4:00 p.m.
