Ward, Rubin, Oliver lead Pioneers to high-scoring home victory

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's lacrosse team accelerated to a 23-12 over the Hendrix College Warriors Easter Sunday afternoon win at Pat Deacon Stadium.

The ringleader of the scoring operation were junior midfielder Julia Ward and sophomore attacker Alexis Rubin, who each registered a game-high six goals as the Pioneers pulled away from Hendrix late in the first half to grab their 10th victory of the season.

It was the third time this month the Pioneers have scored 20 or more goals in a game.

Hendrix rumbled to the first goal of the game at the 27:40 mark of the first half, but Transylvania sophomore midfielder Emma Oliver struck back 40 seconds later to tie the game at 1-all. Hendrix and Transylvania waged a mostly back-and-forth first half before the Pioneers took over the final five minutes of the half.

While the Warriors claimed leads of 2-1 and 4-2, Oliver did her part to keep the Pioneers in the game, notching her third goal of the day at the 9:43 mark of the first half to give the Pioneers a 6-5 lead and cap off a 4-1 scoring run.

With Hendrix holding onto an 8-7 lead late in the first half, Ward went into another gear, scoring on back-to-back free position shots, and adding a third goal with 22 seconds remaining in the half to hand the Pioneers an 11-8 lead into the break.

The Pioneers took their half-closing 4-0 run into the second half, using scores from sophomore attacker Lindsey Jenkins and the fourth goal of the day from Ward to stretch their lead to 13-8. With fresh legs and the friendly confines of Pat Deacon Stadium providing a familiar sense of comfort and energy, the Pioneers went on to outscore Hendrix 12 to 4 in the second half.

A goal at the 7:30 mark of the second half by sophomore attacker Alexis Rubin turned the clock into perpetual motion for the rest of the afternoon, as the Pioneers scored seven consecutive goals down the stretch.

Along with Rubin and Ward's offerings of six goals each, Oliver followed closely behind with a five-goal performance. Jenkins and freshman attacker Brianna McCulley also each achieved hat tricks in the win.

Freshman defender Harper Zeitz led the Pioneers in the backfield with a game-high six caused turnovers and nine ground balls.

The Pioneers moved to 10-2 on the season after wrapping up the nonconference victory versus Hendrix.

Transylvania is back in action next Saturday, April 22 when its hosts Thiel in an Ohio River Women's Lacrosse Conference matchup at Pat Deacon Stadium. That game is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
