Lexington, Ky. – After capturing the first ORLC regular-season crown in program history, the Transylvania women's lacrosse team will open up their postseason mission at home this Friday, May 4 at 1:00 p.m. when the Pioneers face the Hanover College Panthers in the Ohio River Women's Lacrosse Conference Semifinals.
By virtue of winning the ORLC regular season, Transylvania earned the hosting rights for the four-team conference tournament which runs Friday and Saturday at Pat Deacon Stadium in Lexington.
The Pioneers are the No. 1 seed (16-1, 11-0 ORLC) and will play host to the No. 4 seed Panthers (11-6, 8-3 ORLC) this Friday at Pat Deacon Stadium in a Friday semifinal doubleheader.
The winner of the Friday afternoon semifinal will advance to the ORLC Championship game, which will be held on Saturday, May 5 at a time to be determined. Wednesday's semifinal winner will take on the winner of No. 2 seed Washington & Jefferson University and No. 3 seed Saint Vincent College in Saturday's championship game.
The winner of the ORLC Tournament will be awarded the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, which will begin the following week. Now in its fourth year of existence, the ORLC awarded the NCAA Tournament automatic bid for the first time last season. The inaugural bid was claimed by defending tournament champion Washington & Jefferson.
This season, the Pioneers completed a perfect 11-0 run through conference play and are currently riding a program-record 14-game winning streak. Transylvania's last loss came on March 1 when the team dropped a 15-11 result to Wittenberg.
Friday's semifinal game will be the second matchup of the season between the Panthers and the Pioneers. In their previous meeting, Transylvania claimed an 18-3 victory over Hanover as eight different Pioneers scored goals.
Transylvania is led on offense by freshman attack Shelby Wuest, whose 70 goals on the year rank second in the ORLC. Senior captain Julia Ward has also been a focal point of the Pioneers offense this season as she has compiled 49 goals, eight assists, and 41 ground balls.
Tickets for Friday's tournament semifinal games are $8 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, and free to children ages 11 and under. Free admission will be granted to students, faculty, and staff of both Transylvania and Hanover who provide a university ID card.
