Terre Haute, Ind. – The Transylvania swimming team competed in the first day of the inaugural Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at the Vigo County Aquatic Center.
The first day of championship racing was highlighted by a third-place finish by sophomore Mattie Fogle in the women's 500 yard freestyle event (5:25.76 seconds) and a third-place showing by freshman Drew Dodds in the men's 200 yard individual medley (1:56.22 seconds).
Both swimmers, competing in their signature events, were able to put together top-three finishes in the finals sessions at the historic first day of conference competition which marked the first time a conference swimming and diving championships has been sponsored by the HCAC.
The men's and women's relay teams also turned in solid performances in the women's and men's 200 freestyle relay races. The quartet of senior Kiali Jelinek, freshman Emma Lloyd, and sophomores Grace Galyon and Sarah Haerle took third in the women's 200 free relays in a time of 1:44.80 seconds.
The Transylvania men's relay team of Dodds, freshmen Noah Collins, Ben Smith, and senior Zak Griffis also delivered a third-place showing in the men's 200 freestyle relay, touching the final wall in 1:31.86 seconds.
The Transylvania women stand in third place out of five teams after the first day while the Transylvania men are slotted in fourth place.
Transylvania returns to the pool tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for the second of the three-day event. Key events include the 100 butterfly, 200 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, and 100 backstroke.
