Sewanee, Tn. – The Transylvania University women's tennis team joined their men's counterparts for a trek to Sewanee for a day-night doubleheader, as they resumed their 2015-16 season with their first spring action of the year.
The Pioneers started the day strong but came up short Saturday with a 7-2 decision to Piedmont College at the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center in Sewanee, Tennessee.
After doubles action, the Pioneers led 2-1 by taking the #1 and #3 matches with 8-6 and 9-7 scores, thanks to stout performances by Morgan Cowart and Durden Smith, and the duo of Tatianna Burkett and Karina Rivera.
From there, the Lions of Piedmont took over in singles matches, winning all six decisions in straight sets to overtake the Pioneers 7-2 in the end. The clinching decision came in the #3 singles contest when sophomore Mary Grace Amato put up a good fight but was edged out in both sets 6-4, 6-4.
Transylvania returns to action on Saturday, March 12 at Birmingham-Southern with a 10:00 a.m. start.
