Orlando, Fla. – The Transylvania University tennis teams found themselves outmatched, as both teams fell to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs 9-0 on Tuesday morning.
The men's tennis team fell behind early in their matchup, when they were swept in doubles play.
The singles matches were highlighted by junior Luke Groene who took his match deep into the second set before eventually losing 7-5, 5-2 in No. 1 singles.
The women's team also faced an uphill battle from the start, falling behind 3-0 in the match after the three doubles bouts.
Freshman Lucy Herrington forged the most dramatic match of the day, before eventually falling 7-5, 1-6, 5-10 in the No. 3 singles matchup.
Sophomore Kearstin Bruther also turned in a great effort for the Pioneers, as she lost a hard fought match 2-6, 6-7 at No. 4 singles.
While the day's results might have seemed one-sided, Pioneers' coach Kevin Calhoun was not deterred. "Today was more about Texas Lutheran and their ability than Transylvania playing poorly," remarked Calhoun. "I'm really happy with the way we executed what we do, they were just too good. We are excited to get back on the courts tomorrow and bring the energy and discipline Transy Tennis is known for."
The Pioneers continue their Florida trip when they face the Bethel University Royals on Wednesday, March 15.
