Lexington, Ky. – On Senior Day 2018 for the Transylvania women's tennis team, the Pioneers sent their lone senior Kearstin Bruther out with a resounding 9-0 victory against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon at the Transylvania Tennis Courts.
Prior to diving into their dominant win and their fourth of the season against a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent, the Pioneers paid tribute to Bruther with a pre-match ceremony before celebrating in the form of a nine-match sweep over the Yellow Jackets.
On her senior day, Bruther was well-involved with the march to victory as she teamed with freshman Alyssa Igyarto for an 8-1 win in No. 2 doubles and collected a solo win as well on Saturday in No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 3-0 win against Sydney Huston.
The Pioneers recorded sizable victories in other battles on Saturday as freshman Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton won in No. 1 doubles 8-2 over Hannah Hesterman and Cayla Walker while junior Merrick Irwin and sophomore Reagan Jobe blanked Sydney Huston and Rylea Amspaugh in No. 3 singles, 8-0.
The Pioneers raised their conference record to 4-1 on a day for celebration and high-level performance.
"Senior Day is always special but today was particularly so," said Transylvania tennis head coach Kevin Calhoun. "Kearstin has been an amazing teammate, leader, and player for four years. She is what Transylvania tennis strives to be and we are grateful to give her a win on her senior day."
The Pioneers complete the home portion of their fall regular season with a 3-1 record. Transylvania will finish up its HCAC schedule with three straight matches on the road, beginning with a road match at Earlham College on Wednesday, October 10. That match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start.
