Transylvania women's tennis blanks Manchester in HCAC opener

9-0 score

North Manchester, Ind. – The Transylvania women's tennis team opened the 2019 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season with a resounding 9-0 victory over the Manchester University Spartans at the MU Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers dominated the Spartans throughout the day, dropping just six games as a team on Saturday, an effort that pleased head coach Bill Carey.

"Our team has high expectations for this season and we were eager to get the conference season underway," remarked Carey. "I think it showed today. We came out with great energy and focus and sustained that through the final handshake."

Transylvania raced out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play thanks to an 8-0 win by Porsche Robinson and Jessica Burton, an 8-2 victory via Sheila Cetina and Merrick Irwin, and an 8-0 win from the duo of Alyssa Igyarto and Christina Duvall.

The Pioneers' dominance poured over into the singles portion of the match as Cetina, Burton, Igyarto, and Duvall each captured 6-0, 6-0 victories. Robinson picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Karly Eichenauer in the No. 1 singles match, while Irwin cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Kaitlyn Burger at No. 4 singles.

The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow morning as they travel to Defiance, Ohio for an 11:00 a.m. matchup with the Defiance College Yellow Jackets at the Dix Tennis Facility.
