WESTERVILLE, Ohio—The Transylvania University track and field team opened its indoor season at the Otterbein University Invitational placing 14th in women's competition and 11th in men's competition.
The Pioneers had strong performances in multiple events, proving they are poised to build upon last year's momentum.
Sophomore Taylor Sanders had the first highlight of the day for Transylvania, setting a personal record in the women's shot put. Sanders' throw of 35'11.25" best her previous best throw by more than two feet.
Transylvania's top placing of the day belonged to the women's 4x200 meter relay team, who placed third overall in the event with a time of 1:54.79, as the Pioneers narrowly edged host, Otterbein, in an exciting photo finish. The team was comprised of juniors Katie Cohron and Shelby Auxier and freshmen Bethany Herron and Savannah Hemmer.
Hemmer continued her success in the relay later in the day, placing eighth overall in the women's 200 meter dash.
On the men's side, the Pioneers were led by sophomore Cole Green, the reigning Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Freshman of the Year. Green led the men's 4x200 meter relay, which included seniors Brian Daff and Ben Lyvers, along with freshman Aaron Botts to a sixth-place finish.
