LEXINGTON, KY.- The Transylvania University volleyball team split two matches in a doubleheader against Covenant College and Bethany College on Saturday. The Pioneers beat Covenant three sets to none and lost to Bethany 3-1. The matches were part of a six team tournament held at the Clive M. Beck Center on Transy's campus on Friday and Saturday.
In the first match against Covenant, Transylvania dominated, winning by scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-21 but never trailing in the match. After going back and forth in the first two sets, Transy put the match away early in the third, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. The Pioneers were led by strong matches from outside hitter Erin Romito and setter Berkleigh Brogan. A junior, Romito planted 22 kills on 48 total attacks, with only one error, for a kill percentage of .438. Brogan recorded 39 of the team's 45 assists and recording six digs for Transylvania. Defensively, Audrey Brown and Marissa Coutinho were key contributors, digging 19 and 11 balls respectively.
The Pioneers were not as successful in the second match, dropping the first two sets 21-25 and 22-25 before winning the third 25-23. Transy dropped the fourth set 25-19 to end the match. Brown and Brogan put together a tremendous game, with Brown recording 27 digs and Brogan setting effectively for 38 assists. Freshman Katelyn Maller led the Pioneers with a .333 kill percentage, putting away six kills on 12 total attacks. Transy struggled with the serve in the second match, committing 11 service errors.
After today's action, Transylvania is 3-1 heading into their match Tuesday against rival Centre College in Danville, KY.
