ATLANTA, Ga.—The Pioneers' volleyball team dropped its first two matches in the Emory Classic on Friday afternoon. The tournament, held in Atlanta, Ga., includes some of the top teams in the country, including host Emory University, who is ranked fourth in the most recent AVCA poll.
In their first match of the day, Transylvania won the first set by a score of 25-20, before dropping the next three and losing the match 3-1. Transy was plagued by errors in the match, committing 35 attacking errors to 38 kills, for a kill percentage of .022. The Pioneers also struggled with the serve, committing 11 service errors while only nabbing eight aces. Juniors Erin Romito and Courtney Smith led Transy with 10 kills a each, while sophomore Berkleigh Brogan assisted on 24 of the Pioneers scores and junior Audrey Brown recorded 17 digs to lead the Pioneers.
In the second match, Emory swept Transylvania in three sets, 25-10, 25-15 and 25-20. Again, errors were the story of the match as the Pioneers committed 22 attacking errors and seven serving errors while only converting 30 kills and two aces. Romito, Brogan and Brown led Transy in kills, assists and digs, respectively, in the second match.
The Pioneers (4-3) will continue their weekend tomorrow with matches against Randolph-Macon and Birmingham-Southern at noon and 2:00pm.
