DEFIANCE, Ohio.—The Transylvania University volleyball team lost their first match of the weekend to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College. The Yellow Jackets of Defiance were picked as the HCAC preseason favorites to win the conference championship.
Despite a close match that saw the first two sets extend beyond 25 points, the Pioneers found themselves on the losing end each time and fell, 3-0. In the first set, Transy lost 26-28 before dropping the second set 24-26 and the final set 15-25.
Transylvania had more kills, 37, than Defiance, 35, but ultimately, errors plagued the Pioneers and proved too much to overcome. Transy committed 30 attacking errors, nine service errors and two ball handling errors. Defiance, on the other hand, committed 17, three and one.
The starting trio of outside hitter Erin Romito, defensive specialist Audrey Brown and setter Berkleigh Brogan led the Pioneers in the match. Romito's 19 kills led all attackers in the match, as did Brogan's 33 assists. Brown recorded 19 digs to pace Transylvania on the defensive side of the ball.
The match was the Pioneers' first conference of the match of the season, and with the loss, they fall to 7-7 on the year and 0-1 in HCAC play. Their season continues tomorrow afternoon against HCAC opponent Bluffton University and Wittenberg University before returning home next weekend.
