Pioneers fall to Washington in first of three weekend matches

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—In their first of three weekend matches, the Transylvania University volleyball team fell to Washington University, 3-0 Friday at Washington University Field House.

The Bears won by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-13.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first set, the Pioneers narrowed the Bears' lead before taking a 13-11 lead. Trailing 8-6, Transylvania's Tricia Moffatt put the ball out of reach of Washington's defense to pull within one. With freshman Holly Dorfman on the serve, the Pioneers landed back-to-back points thanks to kills from Madison Lovern and Erin Romito tying the set at eight apiece.

The Bears held off the Pioneers momentarily until Erin Hoffmann sent two serves over the net which forced Washington errors giving the Pioneers a 13-11 advantage. Both battled to hold the lead until the Bears edged ahead 19-18 on a kill from Alex Sheredy giving the Bears their final lead. Following Sheredy's kill, Washington went on a six-to-one rally to close the set.

Much was the same early in the second set, as neither team was able to secure a lead. The Pioneers held the Bears' lead to three until another Sheredy kill sparked an 11-2 Washington run to take the second set, 25-13.

Washington picked up the first four points of the deciding set and was able to carry the momentum throughout on their way to another 25-13 win to take the match.

Romito led the Pioneer offense with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Hoffmann tallied a match-high 17 digs.

The Pioneers will play two matches Saturday morning taking on Westminster at 10 a.m. and Hendrix at 12:15 p.m. in their final matches of the season.
