Lexington, Ky. - The Transylvania volleyball team delivered its most dominant performance of its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season, collecting a 25-21, 25-16, 25-5 win against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets Saturday afternoon at the Beck Center.
The Pioneers had a .447 overall hitting percentage for the match, believed to be a single-match program record for hitting percentage on Saturday.
Angling for space near the top of the HCAC standings, the Pioneers moved to 6-2 in conference play to maintain a hold of third place with one match left in the regular season. The Pioneers grew their record to 17-7 for the 2017 campaign.
After a tight beginning, the Pioneers collected themselves in the clutch of the first set and accelerated from that point to the end of the afternoon, one which lasted just 70 minutes.
The first set included its fair share of hard hitting and rapid responses from both teams. The Pioneers buckled down and outscored Defiance 5-1 down the stretch after the Yellow Jackets had rallied back to tie up the action at 20-all.
With their game in gear after a stirring set one finish, the return game improved even more for Transylvania in the second set as it climbed ahead 12 to 6. Sophomore right side hitter Jordan Horne provided seven of the Pioneers' 17 second-set kills en route to a 25-16 victory.
The third set included a defensive masterpiece as the Pioneers dug out nearly every Defiance attack, building leads of 9-1 and 16-2 to end doubt quickly. Leading 9-2, the Pioneers embarked on their second major run of the set with sophomore defensive specialist Rian Boelter holding serve and aiding in a sharp defensive effort.
Set by set, the Pioneers amassed hitting percentages of .394, .429, and .542. The Pioneers collected 45 kills on the afternoon and doubled Defiance's dig total, collecting 50 to the Yellow Jackets' 25.
Horne and freshman middle blocker Ellie Stigger each collected a match-high 12 kills. Sophomore setter Hannah Talkers was an offensive ringleader with a match-high 31 assists, seven digs, and four kills. Sophomore defensive specialist Abby Wills led the Pioneers with 15 digs.
Transylvania wraps up its conference foray on Wednesday, October 25 when its hosts the Mount St. Joseph University Lions at the Beck Center for Senior Day 2017. Prior to Wednesday's 7:00 p.m. contest the Pioneers will celebrate their lone senior, Marissa Coutinho as they celebrate her illustrious career.
