Greencastle, Ind. – The Transylvania volleyball team began its weekend voyage to the DePauw University Tournament with a solid victory on Friday evening, coasting past the Millikin University Big Blue in three sets, 26-24, 25-17, 25-20 at Neal Fieldhouse.
The Pioneers extended its season-high winning streak to three matches and have won of four of their last five, also a season-best. Transylvania's overall record stands at 4-5 in 2018, while the Big Blue dropped to 4-4.
An offensive peppering from both teams in the first set commenced the early evening as the Pioneers delivered 16 kills to five errors, while the Big Blue matched Transy with 16 kills against six errors. The Pioneers erased an early deficit in the first set and struck back from a 6-11 deficit to reel off five straight points for an 11-11 tie. Transy continued its momentum by surging ahead 17-14, but Millikin swung back and forced an 18-18 tie.
Transylvania and Millikin dueled down the stretch, finding themselves tied again at 24-all. The Pioneers took charge as senior outside hitter Jennifer Buckman set up junior setter Hannah Talkers for a kill and a one-point lead, and Talkers responded in kind to set a kill by junior outside hitter Taryn Glass to wrap up the first set.
Transylvania broke out of a 9-9 tie in the second set to score nine of the next 10 points in the set and pull away to victory. Talkers held serve for eight straight points as the Pioneers created their buffer to take a two sets to none lead.
The Pioneers came up with another veteran finish in the third set, extending a 16-15 advantage to 21-16 to wrap up a five-point victory for the sweep.
Junior right side hitter Jordan Horne led the way with 13 kills, followed closely by Buckman's 12 kills. Buckman provided an all-around performance, adding 12 digs and five assists. Talkers posted a match-high 29 assists along with nine digs and six kills. Junior libero Abby Wills matched Buckman with 12 kills.
Transylvania returns for a busy day of volleyball at Neal Fieldhouse as the Pioneers face Concordia-Chicago at 10:00 a.m. followed by Muskingum at 2:00 p.m.
