Transylvania volleyball grows winning streak to six after home win against Franklin

Talkers to Stigger

Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania volleyball team maintained its hold upon first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference standings with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-17 win against the Franklin College Grizzlies on Wednesday evening at the Beck Center.

Dictating the tempo from the outset, the Pioneers made quick work of conference rival Franklin as they extended their season-high win streak to six games and improved to 6-1 in HCAC play, and 12-9 overall. Franklin fell to 9-15 overall, and 2-4 in conference action.

Competing in its second-to-last regular season game in the Beck Center for 2018, the Pioneers savored their time on their home floor but also spent every moment Wednesday night in a state of efficiency, marked by a set-best .357 hitting percentage in the second set.

Transylvania set the tone of the contest immediately, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Billingsley and junior right side hitter Jordan Horne led the charge up front early with five and three kills respectively as the Pioneers shut down the first set quickly.

Junior setter Hannah Talkers had a busy second set and involved herself in much of the action as the Pioneers amassed 15 kills to five errors en route to a 25-17 win. The junior acquired 22 of her match-high 30 assists by the end of the second set.

The Pioneers zoomed out to another quick lead in the third set, cultivating 5-0 and 8-1 advantages.  Middle blocker Ellie Stigger, the reigning HCAC Offensive Player of the Week, delivered an unstoppable block to stretch Transyvlania's third-set lead to seven points.

After Talkers set up Stigger for a latter kill in the set, the Pioneers possessed a 20-9 lead. Franklin made one final rally before the Pioneers wrapped up a 25-17 victory in the last set.

Horne had a match-high 15 kills to go with five digs, one ace, one assist, and one block. Junior defensive specialist Hadley Trenaman led the way with 14 digs.

Transylvania is next in action on Friday, October 19 at Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Kentucky for a nonconference match. Opening serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
