Lexington, Ky. – The No. 23 Transylvania volleyball team swept the Franklin College Grizzlies on Wednesday night at the Beck Center to continue its perfect start to the month of October.
Transylvania improved to 21-4 and 6-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play to maintain its first-place standing with three conference matches remaining while Franklin dropped to 15-11 and 3-3 in HCAC play.
A spirited Franklin team headed into the Beck Center looking to upset the Pioneers and the visiting team's hopes shone early in the first set by cutting a four-point Transy lead to 15-14. Following a Pioneer timeout, Transylvania regrouped to outscore Franklin 10-5 the rest of set behind seven kills from Stigger.
The Pioneers climbed out to a 15-7 advantage in the second set as Jordan Horne levied an unstoppable kill. Franklin responded with a 4-0 run but the Pioneers went back on the offensive as Sylvie Miller delivered an ace for a 17-11 advantage. Transylvania finished the set on a 6-0 scoring run to grab a two-set lead. Emmie Bender provided the final blow with one of the Pioneers' six aces on the evening.
Franklin grabbed early momentum in the third set with a 4-1 lead before the Pioneers punched back on a 7-1 run to take the lead for good. Transylvania went on another pivotal scoring run to build a 21-8 advantage. The Pioneers finished off the match the same way they started, with successive kills by Stigger to collect their fourth sweep in six HCAC matches.
Sylvie Miller led the Pioneers with 24 digs, her second-highest in-match total of the season. Horne added 10 kills and a block for the Pioneers.
Wednesday's match concluded a three-match homestand for the Pioneers.
Transylvania will next play on Saturday, October 26 at Defiance College for a twin bill; the Pioneers will take on Defiance at 1:00 p.m. in an HCAC match followed by a 3:00 p.m. contest versus Olivet College in a nonconference match. Both games will be played at Defiance's Karl H. Weaner Center in Defiance, Ohio.
