LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania All-American
Megan Mitchell (West Lafayette, Ind.) cranked a pair of home runs and drove in five Thursday, leading the Pioneers to a 13-0 five-inning win over Hanover and sweep of a Heartland Conference doubleheader at Hall Field.
Winners of 13 straight games, the Pioneers are 20-11-1 overall, 13-1 in HCAC play, while the Panthers are 6-20, 2-10 HCAC. Coupled with a 5-0 win in the first game behind the pitching of
Kendra DeArk (Jeffersonville, Ind.), Transy clinched its third straight HCAC regular season title and the right to host next week's conference tournament.
Transy was playing for the first time in 10 days due to final exams and difficulties with the weather and needed a pair of victories to clinch their third championship in a row. They also posted 20 or more wins in a season for the third consecutive season.
The Pioneers scored early and often in the second game and got four shutout innings from winning pitcher
Kaitlyn Foree (Pleasureville, Ky.). She struck out four and walked two while giving up just two hits. DeArk pitched the fifth.
Mitchell had a two-run homer in the first to deep left, following a single by
Michelle Ladanyi (Winchester, Ky.).
Ashley Pait (Jeffersonville, Ind.) singled and
Chelsea Meiners (Louisville, Ky.) was hit by a pitch ahead of Mitchell's second homer an inning later. She hit a towering blast to right and when the Hanover outfielder crashed through the fence in pursuit, she circled the bases.
It was her 14th homer of the year, three short of her school record, and the 31st of her career, one behind Andrea Fitzpatrick's current mark.
DeArk tied a record in the first game. She improved to 7-5 on the year with a four-hitter, striking out five and walking none. It was her 49th win of her career, which tied Amy Meikel for second on the school list. Erin Hunter tops the list with 69 wins.
The Pioneers led by only a run scored in the first inning before taking advantage of five hits to score four times in the fifth. Mitchell had an RBI hit and
Jessica Pierce (LaGrange, Ky.) singled home two more.
Bethany Evans' hit plated the final run.
Pierce had three of Transy's 11 hits and Mitchell drove in two, giving her seven on the day.
Kristen Harlan (Bremen, Ky.) got the final three outs of the game for the Pioneers.
Transy is back in action on Sunday, hosting Defiance at 2 p.m. in a makeup doubleheader. The Pioneers will celebrate Senior Day prior to the first pitch for fourth-year players
