Ravens down Pioneers in two-game sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ANDERSON, Ind. â€" An eighth-inning rally in game two by the Anderson Ravens solidified a sweep of Transylvania softball Saturday in a homer-heavy day.

The Ravens downed the Pioneers 10-2 in game one, while barely pulling out the victory in game two, 4-3.

Freshman first baseman Shelby Bailey led the Pioneer offense, going 4-for-7, notching one run and one RBI over the course of the day. Sophomore pitcher and designated player Katie Hulsman also pitched in, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Hulsman came out swinging in game one, providing the only offense for the Pioneers, starting with her first plate appearance in the top of the second. Leading-off the inning, Hulsman patiently waited for a knee-level pitch, smashing it for a home run across the leftfield fence, putting the Pioneers up 1-0.

The long balls would continue, but not for the Pioneers.  The Ravens would knock back-to-back homers in the second and third inning, racking up four quick runs to lead 4-1. Anderson would plate another four runs through the third and fifth innings, going up 8-1 before the Pioneers halted their momentum in the sixth.

Hulsman would provide the only other offense for the Pioneers, hitting her second solo home run to cut the deficit to 8-2. Anderson would cap the victory with another two runs in the sixth to snag game one, 10-2.

The Pioneers would struggle in the opening frames of game two, as the Ravens' Yardley Collett would nail a homer for a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.  A double in the second by Anderson would notch another RBI, putting the Ravens up 2-0.
Bailey's lead-off appearance in the fourth sparked Transylvania, as she sailed a home run, followed immediately by a second off the bat of freshman Krista DeBurger, knotting the game at 2-2.

Bats would be silenced for the next two innings, pushing the game into the eighth. With one runner placed on second, shortstop Maddy Rodabaugh would hit the 3-2 go-ahead single.
Pitcher Jamie Lutes would give up a double in the first at-bat, tying the game at 3-3. Two following singles would put a Raven on third place, bringing Collett, who did damage in the first, to the plate. A single would bounce through the left side, plating the winning run, closing out the two-game Raven sweep.

Transylvania will face Franklin in the last home series of the season April 24 at 3:30 p.m. before capping the conference season at Defiance on April 26.
