Box Score 2 LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University softball team took both games in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Defiance College Saturday at John R. Hall Field.
The Pioneers took game one, 2-0 before logging a 4-2 win in the second game.
Cassie Hamilton singled to the pitcher to lead off the inning for Transylvania, before a sacrifice bunt from Lauren Willett moved Hamilton to second with only one out. Shelby Bailey drove one back to the pitcher to give the Pioneers runners at the corners as Krista DeBurger stepped to the plate.
A passed ball on a third strike sent Hamilton home giving the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Transylvania added another run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Jamie Lutes to score Bailey from second after Bailey sent a shot to the gap in left center.
Lutes was a force on the mound in game one limiting the Yellow Jackets to a mere four hits.
In game two, Defiance plated one run in the top of the first but the Pioneers responded in the bottom of the inning as Bailey tied the game at one scoring on a passed ball.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, but the Pioneers tied in the home half of the fourth thanks to an RBI single from Chelsea Pharris to score Rhyan Disser.
The Pioneers added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the win, 4-2. Katie Hulsman sent a liner down the left field line scoring Willet in the fifth, before an RBI double to left center from Bailey which scored Dorsey gave the Pioneers an insurance run.
Lutes posted another solid innings in game two, before Hulsman took the mound in the fifth. The duo held the Yellow Jackets to five hits in game two.
Bailey finished the day 5-for-7 from the plate with one RBI to lead the Pioneers.
The Pioneers return to Hall Field Wednesday for a double header against Thomas More College. Wednesday's first game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
