LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A lone run in the bottom of the seventh lifted Spalding University of the visiting Transylvania University softball team, 15-14, in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader at Ruckriegel Park.

The Pioneers tallied runs in each of the first six innings, but an RBI single to right field by Alyssa McAfee gave the Eagles the win in game two, after Transy took game one, 2-1.

Transylvania's offense plated two runs in the first inning, as a two RBI double from Rhyan Disser scored Krista DeBurger and Lauren Willet to give the Pioneers a 2-0 nod. The Eagles, however, answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to build a four run advantage.

Transy used five hits to score four runs in the second, as a two RBI triple from Shelby Bailey scored Ashley Frees and Madison Dorsey. Willett followed by legging out a bunt to drive in Bailey. Later in the inning, Katie Hulsman drew a base on balls with the bases loaded and two outs for an RBI to tie the game at six.

The Eagles regained the lead at 7-6 in the home half of the inning, but Willett knocked an RBI single to center field in the top of the third to tie the game at seven apiece.

The Pioneer defense held the Eagles scoreless the next two innings, while logging three more runs to build a 10-7 lead after five innings.

Bailey got the four-run sixth inning started for the Pioneers with a sacrifice to score Miranda Mathews. After a single from Lindsey Barton, DeBurger tripled to center field which scored Barton all the way from first putting the Pioneers up 12-7. Lutes sent a two-run shot over the fence in left field giving the Pioneers a 14-7 lead.

Spalding rallied in the bottom half of the inning tying the game as the teams prepared for the final inning. Hulsman reached on an error by the Spalding third baseman, but the Pioneers could not cross the plate. With one out, Spalding's McAfee provided the walk-off RBI single to right field securing the split.

The Pioneers took game one thanks to timely runs in the sixth and seventh innings. After both teams were held scoreless through the first five innings, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single from Shelby Bailey.

Krista DeBurger sent a double down the left field line giving Transylvania a runner in scoring position, as Bailey stepped to the plate to give Transy the lead.

Elizabeth Young doubled to left field to lead off the top of the seventh for the Pioneers. Mathews checked in to pinch run for Young, before Cassie Hamilton laid down a successful sacrifice to move Mathews to third base with only one out in the inning. The Pioneers looked to add to their 1-0 lead in the final frame and an RBI single from Lindsey Barton put the Pioneers up 2-0.

The Transylvania defense held off the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh, after Spalding plated their first run of the game to pull within one. With two on base, Jamie Lutes got a fly ball out to centerfield to end the game and pick up her fifth win of the season.

Lutes went the distance for the Pioneers allowing only three hits, while striking out four batters. Bailey led the Pioneers' offense with four RBIs on the day.

The Pioneers travel to Maryville (Tenn.) Friday for another non-conference doubleheader. Friday's first game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
