LEXINGTON, Ky.—The Transylvania University Pioneers earned a split in a non-conference softball action against the visiting Wilmington College Quakers on Thursday. After run-ruling the Quakers in the first game 8-0, Transy dropped the final game 7-0.

In game one, Transylvania started things with a bang, using a leadoff homerun by shortstop Shelby Bailey to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The lead held at one until the bottom of the fourth when the Pioneers picked up another to take a 2-0 advantage. First baseman Jessica Koors singled up the middle with one-out before pinch hitter Jamie Lutes doubled to score Koors and give Transy the two-run lead.

The Pioneers added two more in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch hitter Megan Aebersold picked up a bunt single and stole second with one out in the frame. Second baseman Krista DeBurger singled, moving Aebersold around to third. DeBurger stole second and third baseman Elizabeth Young hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Aebersold. DeBurger stole third and scored on an error to give the Pioneers two runs in the inning and a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Transylvania plated four runs to earn the run-rule victory. Ashley Frees was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a single from catcher Cassie Hamilton. After Madison Dorsey hit into a fielder's choice to cut Frees down at third, Bailey singled to load the bases. Lauren Willett singled to score two runs and move Bailey to third. DeBurger doubled and picked up an RBI before Young singled to left field, scoring DeBurger and giving the Pioneers the 8-0 win.

Transylvania tallied 13 hits in the contest, led by DeBurger's 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Nine different Pioneers recorded hits in the game and Young added a game-high two RBIs. On the mound, Katie Hulsman worked a gem, scattering seven hits and working out of several jams to earn the shutout victory.

In game two, Wilmington scored three runs in the third, one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth to win the game, as Transy was unable to get anything going offensively. The Pioneers recorded just three hits in the game, one each from Willet, Hulsman and Chelsea Pharris.

Jamie Lutes picked up the loss on the mound for Transylvania, allowing two earned runs in four innings of work and striking out three.

Transylvania (13-19, 5-7 HCAC) return to conference play this weekend with a doubleheader against Anderson at John Hall Field. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
