Box Score 2 CINCINNATI, Ohio—The Transylvania University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to host Mount St. Joseph on Sunday. In the first game, the Pioneers rallied to tie the game in the seventh but lost on a walk-off single to lose 6-5. Game two saw Transylvania score four times in the top of the seventh, but an early Lion lead was too much to overcome, as Transy lost 7-4.
Mount snatched an early lead in the day's first game, scoring a run in the bottom of the second for a 1-0 advantage. Transylvania responded to take the lead in the top of the fifth, however, adding three runs in the inning. Jamie Lutes reached on an error to open the inning before moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Willett. Madison Dorsey singled to left field, moving Lutes to third base for Ashley Frees. Lutes scored and Frees reached first on another error by the Mount first baseman. Shelby Bailey stepped in and singled to right center, putting Frees on third and scoring Dorsey. Megan Aebersold picked up an RBI on a sacrifice bunt to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead
In the bottom of the frame, the Lions responded with two runs on three hits to tie the score at three. In the bottom of the sixth, an error by Transylvania and homerun from Mount scored two runs and pushed the Lions back in front, 5-3.
Transylvania would rally in the top of the seventh to even the score, 5-5. With two outs, Frees walked and Bailey singled to left field, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Aebersold hit a ball to centerfield and an error by the Lions' outfielder allowed Frees and Bailey to score. Mount responded in the bottom however with a two-out, bases loaded single to win the game 6-5.
The Pioneers picked up five hits in the game, led by three from Bailey, who was also one of three Transy players to record an RBI. Starting pitcher Katie Hulsman picked up a no decision on the mound, going six innings and allowing four unearned runs. Lutes came in in the seventh and got two outs before allowing the winning run.
In game two, Mount took a four-run lead in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on three hits. In the bottom of the second, the Lions pushed their lead further, picking up another run on three hits to take a 5-0 lead. Two more runs in the bottom of the fourth gave the Lions a comfortable 7-0 lead heading into the final three innings of play.
Transylvania threatened all game, getting runners to scoring position in four of the first six innings but was unable to score as they left 10 runners on base in the first six innings. The Pioneers got on the board in the seventh, scoring four runs on five hits, highlighted by a three-run homerun from Bailey, but the large Lion lead was too much as the game ended 7-4 in favor of Mount.
Dorsey and Aebersold each had three hits as the Pioneers outhit the Lions by a 12-10 margin. Bailey was tied for the game-high with three RBIs, matching Katie Hoelmer of Mount St. Joseph. Lutes picked up the loss for Transy, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Hulsman came on in relief to work two perfect innings for the Pioneers.
Transylvania (13-21, 5-9 HCAC) concludes its season on Monday with a doubleheader against Anderson at John Hall Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
