Pioneers take on the best West Michigan has to offer in Day 5 of Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Transylvania softball team has encountered a polarizing amount of action within the span of a day each of their first four days at the Spring Games, and Day Five proved to be no different.

The Pioneers squared off against two of the most notable rivals in the Division III landscape on Friday in the Hope Flying Dutch and Calvin Knights and came away with their third win-loss split in five days, devouring Calvin 11-2 before Hope got the best of the Pios 3-1 in the nightcap.

Transylvania has now won all five of their games by eight runs or more, all of which have come in five-inning occurrences. Conversely the Pioneers have lost four of their five games in Florida by one run.

The Pioneers commenced their night of action with the matchup against the Knights.

Freshman third baseman Shelby Grambell, junior shortstop Shelby Bailey,  freshman pitcher Meg Liter, and freshman designated pitcher Jenna Stiles all scored two runs a piece to ensure the Pioneers' nine-run victory.

Junior infielder Krista DeBurger and freshman catcher Jessica Powell also contributed with a run each to give Transylvania a total of ten runs by the end of the ninth inning.

Stiles led the way with five RBIs on two hits, while Bailey knocked in two runs on two hits, and Powell knocked in another on one hit.

Liter gave up just two runs on three hits, striking out two batters and giving one base on balls. Senior Jamie Lutes came in and earned the win with no runs on one hit, three strikeouts, and one base on balls.

After a scoreless first inning, the score remained tied 1-1 at the bottom of the second. Three straight runs in the third got Transylvania going. The Pioneers tacked on one more score in a 2-1 run fourth inning and then followed that with a 4-0 run in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead to seal the win.

Transylvania ended their first game of the evening with ten runs, ten hits, eight runs batted in, eight bases on balls, three strikeouts, and nine left on base.

Liter faced 13 batters as Lutes retired eight, giving up no more than two runs on four hits.

The second game of the night took a more defensive tone, as Hope and Transylvania exchanged three hits each. Lead-off hitter Brittany Mumford led the way with the lone RBI of the game for the Pioneers while adding a walk in a 1-for-2 night at the plate.

The game belonged to each team's pitcher; Jenna Stiles took the loss as she went six innings, while Sydney Jones got the win as she went the distance for the Flying Dutch. Stiles scattered three strikeouts and issued two walks over her six innings, while Jones built up a nine-strikeout tally.

Hope collected the first run of the game with a Hayley Reitsma RBI triple for a 1-0 Hope lead that would stand until the fifth inning. The Pioneers answered back when Mumford's single into right field scored Katie Hulsman to knot the game at one.

But in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Flying Dutch gained the game-winning runs on a frenzied play; with one out and the bases loaded, Hope's Sydney Jones hit an infield single towards the left side that was scooped up by the shortstop Bailey, who zipped the ball to second. But two runners advanced home on the play to give Hope the lead and breathing room. The Pioneers last chance in the top of the seventh was quelled as Hope held on to a tricky victory.

The Pioneers remain at .500 after a topsy-turvy Day Five. Transylvania rounds out a productive Florida trip with an 11:00 a.m. game against Allegheny and a 1:00 p.m. contest with Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
