Box Score 2 Hanover, IN – The magical season continues for the Transylvania softball team who grew their winning streak to 14 games with a doubleheader sweep of the Hanover Panthers at Kops-Bedel Stadium on Tuesday.
The Pioneers seized Game One with a 7-4 victory and utterly dominated Game Two from start to early finish with an 8-0 win in five innings. Transylvania improved to 25-10 overall, and 13-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
The pair of wins carried on an unforeseen run for the Pioneers who were voted on to finish in eighth place out of nine teams in the HCAC preseason coaches' poll. Standing atop the conference with one series left against second-place Anderson, the Pioneers can finish no lower than second place.
The Pioneers' win prospects were bolstered by freshman Jenna Stiles on the mound who picked up the win; Stiles went the full seven innings, striking out three along the way while just walking one Hanover batter.
Junior slugger Krista DeBurger kept up her remarkable pace at the plate, spearing two more homers in Game One to bring her conference-leading total to 14.
DeBurger commenced the scoring on the afternoon with a two-out home run to left field to drive in Brittany Mumford for a 2-0 lead. The Transy lead was erased by Hanover on a pair of base hits in the bottom of the third to knot the game at two runs apiece.
The game remained a pitcher's duel until the top of the sixth when Transylvania solved their hitting equation. After Shelby Bailey led off the inning with a single, DeBurger came through with her second home run of the game to put Transylvania back on top, 4 to 2. Their teammates caught fire as Shelbi Poehlein and Meg Liter reached base with a single and a walk, and were then driven in by Katie Hulsman's double, raising the lead to 6-2. One more score on a bases-loaded passed ball brought home Hulsman for a 7-2 advantage.
Hanover scooped up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single, but Transylvania eliminated the threat to close with a 7-4 win.
The Pioneers initiated Game Two with a high level of urgency and their sights set on heading back home with an expedited launch time. DeBurger kept up her hot bat with an RBI double to score Shelby Gambrell for Transylvania's first run of the second game. Poehlein followed in DeBurger's footsteps with an RBI single that scored DeBurger from third to lift Transylvania to a 2-0 lead after the first inning.
Senior Jamie Lutes maintained her exceptional final campaign with the Pioneers, taking the start and shutting out Hanover with a five-hit afternoon. Lutes also posted three strikeouts with just one walk. Lutes's efficiency remained at a high level as she sandwiched a single in the first inning between two flyouts and a groundout, and induced the final batter in the second inning into a double play.
Transylvania increased their lead in the fourth-inning with another four runs; the Pioneers began the inning by loading the bases before Mumford delivered a single into center field for the first run of the inning to score Hulsman from third base. Gambrell then smacked a ball at third base which was mishandled to score Miranda Mathews, making it a 4-0 advantage for Transy. DeBurger signaled her presence again with an RBI single to score Ashley Frees, and an RBI groundout by Bailey scored Mumford for the comfortable 6-0 lead.
After another scoreless defensive inning by Lutes in the bottom of the fourth, freshman Jessica Powell put the Pioneers in a winning position with a two-run home run in the top of the fifth, putting Transylvania ahead 8 to 0.
Lutes made quick work of the Hanover order in the bottom of the fifth to conclude matters early and seal the win for Transylvania, who now returns to Lexington before one last road trip to Anderson, Indiana on Sunday for a chance to win the HCAC regular season title.
The Pioneers outhit the Panthers 12 to 5 in Game Two. DeBurger, Hulsman, and Powell each delivered two hits for the Pioneers who again continued their pattern of dynamite second games in their doubleheaders.
The torrid 14-game win streak also wrapped up a 16-2 month for Transylvania in April, one of their best months in school history.
The Pioneers now have a chance to make some more history of their own in what is anticipated to be one of the more compelling regular season finales in HCAC softball history. Standing a game ahead of the Ravens, the Pioneers need to win one of two games in Sunday's doubleheader against the Ravens to seal the HCAC regular season title.
