Box Score Northfield, Minn. – The Transylvania women's soccer team took their talents to the state of Minnesota for their season opener on Friday afternoon, but scoring was elusive as the Pioneers fought to a 0-0 draw with the host Carleton College Knights.
The Pioneers moved to 0-0-1 overall as they dueled with the Knights on a midday match with hot temperatures presiding over both squads.
While both teams played their way to an even result in the end, the match featured a healthy dose of physicality and opportunities for both sides. The Pioneers mustered 11 shots on the afternoon while the Knights produced 17 shots. Each team earned four corner kicks apiece but neither team was able to manifest a goal from those events.
The Pioneers began heating up 20 minutes into the match, as junior Morgan Janes took aim at the net, but was thwarted by Carleton's keeper Elaine Sundberg. Nearly a minute later, senior Charlotte Pruet lined a shot on target, but again Carleton's keeper was ready to make the stop. Pruet, who led the Pioneers in shots on the day with four, took another shot in the 26th minute, but the Knights made another timely stop.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Potts finished the day with six saves, including one in extra time during which Carleton mustered up another seven shots. While the Knights' pace was torrid, Transylvania's lines of defense never wavered, and therefore secured the draw.
Sophomore Maddie Sjogren, last year's leading scorer, created one shot on goal out of two shots as the Pioneers pried for answers, but settled for the draw.
Transylvania will quickly head north up I-35 into downtown St. Paul, Minnesota to take on St. Catherine University, another member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tomorrow for a 1 p.m. match.
