Box Score 2 Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team opened the 2020 season with a pair of dominant victories on day one of the Centre Invitational.
The 2-0 Pioneers outscored the Hiram Terriers, and Denison Big Red a combined 24-0 on the day thanks in part to a .615 team batting average and a .875 on-base percentage.
Alyssa Nunn went 5-for-6 at the plate with two RBI and two runs in the pair of victories, while Abby Frazier was 4-for-5 with five RBI, four runs, and two home runs in her Transylvania debut. The freshman also stole two bases on Saturday.
Transylvania sent Brianna Lamb to the mound in game one. The junior pitched three innings of scoreless ball and struck out one Terrier in her first career win as a Pioneer. Lamb also made her presence felt at the plate, where she was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and three RBI.
Leading the Terriers 4-0 going into the third inning, the Pioneers blew the game open with 10 runs on six hits and a Hiram error in the top of the frame.
Three more hits by the Pioneers in the top of the fifth inning pushed the final score to 16-0 in favor of Transylvania. The 16-run margin of victory is the largest by a Transylvania team since March of 2014.
The Pioneers handed the ball to Kameron Bowling for game two. The junior was sensational on the mound, striking out 11 and scattering three hits over five innings of work in the shutout victory.
Transylvania opened the game with a bang when Frazier blasted a two-run home run over the fence to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Then, in the bottom of the third, Frazier smacked her second two-run homer of the day out of the park to give Transylvania a 5-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.
The Pioneers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when Lexi Childers scored on a Denison error, giving Transylvania the 8-0 victory.
The Pioneers will return to the field tomorrow morning to face both of these teams once more on day two of the Centre Invitational. First pitch between Transylvania and Denison is slated for 11:00 a.m., with a rematch of the Pioneers and Terriers to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Centre Softball Field.
