Transylvania softball sweeps the weekend in Danville to open up 4-0 on the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Danville, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team wrapped up play at the Centre Invitational with a continuation of their early-season dominance on Sunday, sweeping their second straight doubleheader in as many days at Boyle County High School and on the campus of Centre College.

The 4-0 Pioneers got the day started with a 2-0 victory over the Denison University Big Red before capping off the weekend with an 8-0 win over the Hiram College Terriers in five innings.

Abby Frazier led the Pioneers at the plate on Sunday. The freshman went 4-for-7 with a triple, a run, and an RBI.

Transylvania opened game one with Kameron Bowling on the mound. The junior picked up right where she left off yesterday, striking out 11 Big Red batters, and scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings of work.

The game began at snail's pace, with neither side able to manufacture a run over the first four innings of play.

Then, in the top of the fifth, Alyssa Nunn led off with a double and later scored on a triple by Frazier. Allyson O'Dell capped off the inning with an RBI single that scored Frazier, giving Transylvania a 2-0 lead over Denison.

With the lead secured, Bowling shut out the Big Red over the final two innings to preserve the 2-0 Transylvania victory.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped ahead early thanks to an RBI single up the middle by Annie Schuck that put Transylvania up 2-0 in the bottom of the first.

Becca Messing joined in on the offensive showcase with a two-run triple to grow the Pioneers lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Leading the Terriers 6-0 in the fifth, the Pioneers added a run on an RBI single by Janelle Hynes. Laurel Major end the game in early walk-off style, belting a solo home run over the outfield wall to clinch the 8-0 victory for Transylvania in five innings.

Picking up the win in the circle for the Pioneers in game two was Cece Wittry, who allowed just one hit in five innings of work.

The shutout was the junior's first career complete game.

Next up for Transylvania is the voyage west for the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson, Arizona. The Pioneers will open the Classic with a pair of games against Central (IA) and Emerson at the Lincoln Park complex on Friday, March 6.
