Yates’ dramatic game-winner in 87th minute sends Transylvania women’s soccer to glory at Bluffton

Bluffton, Ohio – Emilie Yates delivered the game-winning goal in the final minutes of the Transylvania women's soccer team's 2-1 win over the Bluffton Beavers on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The victory improved the Pioneers' record to 3-2 on the season while the Beavers fell to 0-5-1.

Transylvania attacked early in the half to gain an early advantage as Ainsley Bender found herself past the Beaver defense and attempted a shot that was saved by the Bluffton goalkeeper in the 14th minute.

This early aggression foreshadowed the tale of the match as the Pioneers outshot the Beavers, 6-2 and drew five fouls on Bluffton in the first half.

Entering the second half, both teams continued to trade scoring opportunities. The stalemate was broken on a free kick from 18 yards out by Bluffton's Maddie Huffman in the 59th minute, giving the Beavers a 1-0 advantage.

Coming off the Bluffton goal, the Pioneers continued to push the pace which eventually resulted in a free kick. Emily Payne shot a free kick over the Bluffton wall past the Beaver goalkeeper to draw the match even in the 66th minute at 1-1.

In the closing minutes of the second half, the Pioneers earned a penalty kick off of a counterattack. Emilie Yates set up for the one-on-one and laced the ball in the back of the net to give her team a 2-1 advantage nearing the final whistle.

It was the second game-winning goal of the season by Yates, who scored the game-ender in overtime of the season opener for Transylvania on March 2 vs. Anderson.

Morgan Patton recorded one save in 90 minutes of action to claim the win in goal for Transylvania.

The Pioneers outshot the Beavers 13-3 and were awarded 16 corners to one for the Beavers.

Transylvania returns to the pitch on Wednesday, March 24 where it will host the Earlham College Quakers. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Pat Deacon Stadium.
