Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania women's soccer team dominated possession in the attacking half and cruised to a 4-0 victory over the Earlham Quakers on Wednesday night at Pat Deacon Stadium.
The performance vaults the Pioneers to a 4-2 record while the Quakers drop to 1-5-1 on the year.
It was Senior Night at Pat Deacon Stadium, and lone senior
Casey Hite was honored with a pregame ceremony to usher in a night of celebration on the pitch for the Pioneers.
Transylvania attacked early and often and tormented the Earlham goalkeeper for the opening thirty minutes of the game. The tone was set in the first half hour as Transylvania began to find its footing.
The opening goal was provided by
Abby Baker, who carved through the defense on the left side of the penalty area, leaving herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. Baker calmly slotted home the effort to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 32
nd minute.
From the restart, the Pioneers quickly regained possession and bombed down the right side of the field. Baker sprinted past her defender and whipped in a cross that found the awaiting
Natalie Herring. The junior fired the ball from close range to net her first career goal and double the Pioneer advantage to 2-0 which stood until the halftime whistle.
Entering the second half, the attacking half assault continued as the Pioneers peppered shots from every direction, forcing the Earlham keeper into action.
Transylvania capitalized through a heads-up play from
Emilie Yates. Following a short corner, Yates dribbled to the top of the penalty area and crossed a ball that danced its way through the Earlham defense and found
Meredith Campbell, who placed the ball into the back of the net. Another career-first goal for Campbell lifted the Pioneers to a 3-0 advantage in the 57
th minute.
The final blow came at the will of
Cassandra Thomas as she headed the ball into the penalty area, causing a scramble in the Earlham defense. The ball fell to her feet, and she delivered the finishing touch in the 74
th minute for a 4-0 Transy lead.
The Pioneers outshot the Quakers 23 to 1, including 12 shots on target. The defense for Transylvania stood strong and only surrendered one shot, resulting in a clean sheet for the triumvirate of
Morgan Patton,
Jenna Shalash, and
Laura Martin.
Transylvania will look to continue its two-match winning streak against the Mount St. Joseph University Lions on Sunday, March 28
th at Pat Deacon Stadium at 7:00 pm.
