Lexington, Ky. - On Saturday afternoon, the Transylvania University softball team took on the Fighting Scots of Wooster College out of Wooster, Ohio. The Pioneers were set to play a double header against the Scots of Wooster on Saturday. This matchup was their first game, this season, played on John & Donna Hall Field on the campus of Transylvania University.
For the first game of the double header, the Pioneers came out and looked absolutely unstoppable. They scored a total of nine runs in the first two innings as they held Wooster scoreless. To get the game started in the first inning, junior Kadi Weaver singled up the middle and advanced to third from errors in the outfield. Weaver's hit brought home senior Alyssa Nunn who had gotten on base from a single to right center field. The next batter, junior Carson Murray, brought home Weaver with a triple down the right field line. After Murray, senior Taylor Senter doubled down the right field line to bring home Murray. Senter then advanced to third due to interference being called. To close out the four run inning for the Pios was sophomore Stella Wulker, who popped up to right field for a sacrifice fly to bring Senter home.
It was more of the same in the bottom of the second for the Pioneers as first year Cadee Baker doubled, senior Becca Messing was hit by a pitch, and Nunn was walked to load the bases. Weaver singled to bring home Baker, Murray had a sacrifice fly to bring home Messing, and senior Annie Schuck singled to bring home both Weaver and Nunn. Wulker hit a double to left field to bring home Schuck and close out the scoring for game one of the day.
Eventually the Fighting Scots were able to bat a run in during the fifth inning, but it was too little too late as the run rule was in effect and the Pioneers won the first match 9-1 in the fifth.
The second game of the double header looked much different, as it was a close contest through much of the game. The first two innings went scoreless and in the third inning both teams broke the seal, scoring three runs each before going into the fourth. The three runs scored for the Pios in the third came from a two RBI single by Senter to bring home Weaver and Nunn and a ground out by Wulker that brought home Senter.
In the fourth inning the Pios made a pitching change, switching out junior Marlee Woodward for sophomore pitcher Carlee Jeter. In the inning the Wooster Scots once again found a way to score three runs and take the 6-3 lead. The Pios answered with a run of their own in the fourth, coming from an RBI single by Weaver to bring home Messing. After a run in the fifth and sixth for Wooster, the Pios found themselves down 8-4 heading into the sixth.
In the sixth, Nunn was able to single to bring home Messing, while Schuck singled to bring home Nunn. The Pioneers were unable to score anymore in the sixth or seventh and the game ended with Wooster taking the 9-6 win.
Transylvania softball is back in action Tuesday March, 29th for a double header against Centre College.
