Anderson, Ind. - On Sunday afternoon, The Transylvania Pioneers softball team took on the Anderson University Ravens in an HCAC matchup. Coming into the doubleheader the Pioneers held a record of 15-9 as they looked to tally two more wins on their season total.
Game 1- In the first game of the doubleheader, pitcher Carlee Jeter took to the circle as she looked to help Transylvania capture another victory on the season. The game was slow paced, as both teams struggled to get on base. Jeter put on a strong pitching display, as she only allowed four hits while walking just one batter and striking out three.
The game went scoreless until the top of the fifth, when Annie Schuck was walked with the bases loaded to bring home Alyssa Nunn. Nunn had gotten on base on an infield single to kick off the inning. Abby Frazier was then walked, advancing Nunn to second. Stella Wulker then singled to advance Nunn to third, where Schuck drew the walk to plate one. After taking the 1-0 lead in the fifth, Jeter did a fantastic job of keeping the Ravens of Anderson University scoreless as the Pios held their 1-0 lead for the rest of the game.
Game 2- The story was a bit different in the sequel game, as offense was easier to come by from both teams. The Pioneers racked up a total of 13 hits for the game, while Anderson had six total. Both teams were efficient fielding the ball as well, as they each only had one error for the game. This game was much more of a test of who could hit the ball more effectively.
Jeter was in the circle yet again for the Pioneers and she had another excellent display of pitching throughout this game, allowing zero runs for five whole innings before finally allowing a three run home run in the sixth.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the opening inning, one from an RBI sacrifice bunt by Nunn to bring home Frazier and advance Wulker to third. The next run was scored from an RBI double by first-year Emilie Teall to bring home Wulker. In the second inning Frazier hit a single to third base that brought home Becca Messing to make the score 3-0. The game went scoreless for the next two innings, but in the fifth senior Taylor Senter doubled to left field which brought home two baserunners in Nunn and Messing.
Anderson found their three runs from a homerun in the sixth, but that was all the Pioneers would allow as Schuck hit a single that allowed Frazier to come home and take the 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh. The Pioneers allowed no more hits as they forced Anderson to go three up three down in the bottom of the seventh, taking the sweep in the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon and moving to 17-9 on the year.
The Transylvania softball team is back in action on Wednesday, April 13th for a doubleheader at Hanover College, starting at 1:00 PM.
