Transylvania softball continue strong stretch of play with sweep over Defiance

Defiance, Oh. – The Transylvania softball team continued their stellar conference play in a road doubleheader against the Defiance College Yellow Jackets in Ohio on Saturday, winning game one in convincing fashion by a 7-2 score, and wrapping up the day with a 8-7 triumph.

In game one Transy got out to a great start in the form of a Stella Wulker double, to score Abby Frazier in the bottom of the first. Wulker then followed suit in the second with another double, yet again scoring Frazier. Emilie Teall also singled in the inning to score Taylor Senter, and the Pioneers held a 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, Carlee Jeter was cruising along in the circle, not allowing a single baserunner until a walk in the third, which proved harmless as she got out of the inning one batter later.

Defiance eventually got going in the fourth with two runs to make it a one run affair. In the sixth Frazier bunted for a single that resulted in an error, and Becca Messing and Cadee Baker took advantage, dashing home to make it a 5-2 score. Jeter continued to pitch effectively, and for good measure the Pioneers plated two more in the seventh, to win 7-2.

With the impressive effort, Jeter moved to 10-6 on the year, after a complete game in which she allowed just two runs on 9 strikeouts.

In game two it was the Yellow Jackets going ahead early, with four in the bottom of the first. Senter came across on a wild pitch in the very next frame, but the next two innings went by quietly as the score was 4-1 in favor of Defiance after four innings played. Transylvania roared back to life in the fifth as Alyssa Nunn and Annie Schuck each notched two RBI apiece on doubles, making it 5-4 Transy. In the sixth Senter came up with another big double, hers scoring Wulker and Frazier, adding to the Pioneer lead.

In the seventh Wulker hit another two-bagger, becoming the fifth double of the game for Transylvania, this time bringing home Kinsey Smith. With Transy ahead 8-4 and just three outs holding them from victory, Defiance unleashed a strong comeback bid coming within one from tying. However, Carlee Jeter finished what she started, getting a strikeout and a ground out ending the game with a big 8-7 win.

Marlee Woodward took the decision in the circle, making the junior pitcher 5-3 this season.

The 19-9 Pioneers are back in action with another conference road doubleheader next Saturday, April 23, against Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, Indiana, with a 1 & 3 PM scheduled start.
