Lexington, Ky. – The Transylvania softball team finished the day with one win and one loss in a home doubleheader against the Franklin College Grizzlies at Hall Field on Sunday. The Pioneers lost 9-7 in extra innings, then bounced back to win game two in a shutout 4-0 victory.
In game one, Stella Wulker got the afternoon scoring going with a solo homer to left, and Marlee Woodward kept the Grizzlies off the board through three frames. In the bottom of the third, a Taylor Senter sacrifice fly and a triple from Kadi Weaver added to the Pioneers lead, 3-0. The Grizzlies responded with two runs in the fourth, but Transy came right back with three of their own. Emilie Teall ripped a double to right center to score two, and at the end of the inning the Pioneers led 6-2.
Franklin fought back and found a big inning in the sixth, with four runs on two hits, leaving Transylvania down one, 7-6. With two outs in the bottom of the inning Alyssa Nunn came through with a clutch single to tie the game, however the deadlocked contest went to extra innings where the Grizzlies plated two. They took the game 9-7, in eight innings.
In game two, Carlee Jeter took to the circle and was sharp from the start, not allowing a baserunner until a single up the middle in the fifth inning. A Becca Messing sacrifice fly put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the second, and in the third they plated two more on an error to go up by three. Jeter continued to deal on the mound, hardly allowing any baserunners. In the bottom of the sixth, Teall hit an RBI single to drive in Messing and make it a four-run lead. Jeter shut the door in the seventh, and the Pios won with a 4-0 final.
Jeter took the complete game win in the circle, going 7.0 innings scoreless, with just 2 hits allowed, and 0 walks, along with 3 strikeouts.
The Pioneers are back in action with another HCAC home doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6, taking on Mount St. Joseph with a 5 & 7 PM scheduled start from Hall Field.
