LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The no. 20 ranked Transy Softball team swept the competition in their season openers on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers took down Wooster in the season opener 3-2 before defeating Spalding 2-1. The Pioneers get the season opening win for the first time in two years.

Game 1

Meeting for the third time ever, Transy and Wooster went wire to wire through the first six innings. Down 0-1 in the top half of the 6th inning, Izzy Story doubled to center field and would score from Carson Murray's RBI single. 

With a run already scored in the bottom half of the sixth, Wooster had second and third with two outs, but Carlee Jeter got the batter to ground out to shortstop to escape the inning. Ry'Ann Tharp reached first in the top half of the 7th on an error, and then stole second and third to put the tying run in position to score on contact. Two batters later, Dakota Burke scored Tharp on a sacrifice fly to tie the game and the Pioneers would take the lead a batter later when Madelyn Gilley's pinch hit sacrifice fly scored Katie Mewes. 

Transy would get the Fightin' Scots to go down in order to get the season opening win.

Carlee Jeter pitched 7 innings, allowing just 1 runs and 6 hits. 

Game 2

After a 30 minute break, Transy faced Spalding in another low scoring affair. The Golden Eagles struck first, scoring on an RBI groundout. The Pioneers would strike back the next inning in exciting fashion as Emily Sizemore singled and would later steal home after advancing to third on a groundout. Neither team could plate a run across until the top of the 7th when Burke's clutch double scored Madelyn Gilley who pinch hit and reached first on a walk. 

The Golden Eagles did not go away quietly, but the Pioneers defense stepped up big. Down to their final three outs, the leadoff batter doubled down the left field line. Now in scoring position, Spalding's next batter hit a ball in foul territory in right field that Katie Mewes caught and turned into a double play when the runner tried advancing to third and was thrown out. 

Sophie Moshos would get the win two batters later after getting a groundout. She struck out 11 batters in the win.

Up next: Transy heads to Georgia to compete in the NFCA DIII Leadoff Classic next weekend.
