No. 9 Transy splits on Saturday, nearly takes down No. 1 Trine

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. - The no. 9 ranked Transylvania Pioneers softball team split their Saturday doubleheader in day two of the 2024 Pioneer Classic. Transylvania took the No. 1 ranked Trine Thunder to the limit, suffering a 3-5 heartbreaker, and defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stout 1-0 to split the day.

Game 1

Every run in the game came from a home run. In the bottom of the first, Transylvania struck first with a solo shot by Dakota Burke.

Therese game started with a bang as Dakota Burke hit a shot over the left field wall in the first inning to give Transy the early lead.

Sophie Moshos held the Thunder scoreless through three innings, but Trine tied things up in the fourth with a leadoff home run. Transylvania responded in the bottom half of the inning when Izzy Story hit her third home run of the season, a solo shot to left center.

Down one run going into the top half of the sixth, Trine got a runner on by a hit by pitch, and would score a batter later when Trine's Emily Wheaton hit a two run home run to take a 3-2 lead. Stella Wulker continued to heat up at the plate, hitting her sixth hit of the Pioneer Classic and third home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3.

After a walk with two outs in the top half of the seventh, Trine hit their third home run of the game to break the tie and make it a two run Thunder lead. The Pioneers brought the tying run to the plate, but struck out to end the game.

Transy nearly pulled off the first win over a No. 1 ranked team in program history.

Wulker, Burke, and Story all had hits in the game.

Game 2

In a pitching battle, Transy came out victorious to move to 2-1 in the Pioneer Classic. Carlee Jeter improved to 3-1 on the season with a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out three batters

The only run of the game came in the top of the third inning. Brenna Fisher led off the inning with a double to left center, and would advance to third on a wild pitch. Dakota Burke brought in Fisher on a bunt, which would ultimately be the winning run.

Jeter would give up just one hit over the next three innings. In the bottom of the seventh, UW-Stout put the tying and game winning runs on base with back to back singles, but Jeter would strikeout the next batter and get the last two to fly out to center and pop up to first.

Brenna Fisher would lead Transy in hits with two. Avery Parsons finished 1-3 with a double. Jordan Fico added a double, finishing 1-2.

No. 9 Transylvania improves to 9-2 on the season with the win, and will finish out the Pioneer Classic tomorrow with games against Dominican University and DePauw University.
