LEXINGTON - No. 25 Transylvania Softball split with Defiance College this afternoon, ending their 8 game winning streak. Transylvania defeated the Yellow Jackets 11-3 in 5 innings in game one before falling in extra innings 4-5 in game two in 9 innings.
Game one: Transy 11, Defiance 3
In game one, Transylvania won their 8th game by mercy rule this season after the offense put up 11 runs on 12 hits while
Carlee Jeter earned her 13th win of the season. 8 Pioneers earned hits in the win, with
Stella Wulker leading the way with a 3-3, 3 RBI performance. Transylvania stole 8 bases in the win, with
Reagan Rouleau stealing 2.
TU used a 5 run 1st inning to keep the Yellow Jackets playing from behind the entire game. Defiance scored a pair of runs in the third, but Transy scored 6 of the next 7 runs.
After leading 10-3 in the 5th, an error by the left fielder on a fly ball by Ry-Ann Tharp scored
Avery Parsons to give Transy the mercy rule win.
Game two: Transy 4, Defiance 5
A throwing error by the Defiance catcher gave Transy the 1-0 lead in the 1st inning.
Carson Murray flew out to center field for a sacrifice fly that scored
Ella Steczynski for a 2-0 Pioneer lead.
Transy scored their 3rd run of the game on an RBI single by
Katie Mewes, but struggled to score runners the rest of the game. Defiance scored a run in the 5th, and tied the game at 3-3 with a 2 run home run in the 6th inning.
In the top of the 8th, Defiance scored first on a sacrifice fly to take their first lead of the day. With one out in the bottom half of the inning,
Stella Wulker flew out to left field and scored
Avery Parsons to force a 9th inning. The Yellow Jackets scored again the next half inning on a ground rule double to take the lead, and would hold the Pioneers in the bottom half to earn their first victory over Transy since 2017.
Sophie Moshos broke her own school record in game two today. After setting the single game strikeout record with 16 just a few weeks ago against Centre College, Moshos struck out 19 batters. Moshos accomplished the new record over 9 innings. She struck out over half the batters she faced.
Up next: The Pioneers will host Senior Day tomorrow before their doubleheader against Wilmington. They'll honor their four seniors
