WINCHESTER, Va. — Transylvania University baseball opened NCAA Regional play with an 8-6 victory over Messiah University Friday afternoon at Bridgeforth Stadium.
The Pioneers moved to 30-12 overall after overcoming an early 3-0 deficit with eight unanswered runs across the fourth and fifth innings. Transylvania plated four runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Messiah error while also getting RBI contributions from Trevor Watkins, Kaden Ford and Seita Shiratori.
Transylvania added four more runs in the fifth inning behind RBI hits from Max Finn, Brenton Alcorn and Shiratori to build an 8-3 advantage. Shiratori finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk, while Alcorn recorded two hits and two RBIs. Max Finn scored twice and drove in a run, and Kaden Ford added an RBI and two walks.
Drew Bowles earned the win on the mound after tossing eight innings with eight strikeouts while allowing four runs, three earned. Luke Patton secured the final three outs to hold off a late Messiah run. Transylvania will now take on host Shenandoah on Saturday at 2:30
