LEXINGTON, KY — Transylvania erupted for five second-half goals Saturday at Pat Deacon Stadium to earn a 6-2 victory over Mount Union. The Pioneers improved to 3-1 on the season, while Mount Union moved to 1-2-1.
Mount Union struck first in the 23rd minute when Amir Spratt scored off an assist from Alex Depperschmidt to take a 1-0 lead. Transylvania answered four minutes later as Gus Dickman found the back of the net off an assist from McKay Wheatley to even the match at 1-1.
Ethan Drew came up with a key stop in the 36th minute, saving a Mount Union penalty kick to keep the match level. The Purple Raiders regained the advantage just before halftime when Keegan White scored off an assist from Matt Caputo in the 42nd minute, sending Transylvania into the break trailing 2-1. The Pioneers flipped the match in the final 18 minutes. Reece Heisel converted a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to pull Transylvania even at 2-2. Less than five minutes later, Dickman scored his second goal of the afternoon off assists from Heisel and Stone Work to give the Pioneers their first lead of the match, 3-2. Transylvania continued to pour on the pressure down the stretch. Work scored off an assist from Heisel in the 82nd minute to extend the lead to 4-2 before Heisel added his second goal of the match in the 85th minute. Kellen Crouch capped the scoring in the 87th minute off an assist from Work to secure the 6-2 victory.
Dickman and Heisel each finished with two goals, with Heisel adding two assists. Work recorded a goal and two assists, while Crouch added a goal. Wheatley finished with an assist on Dickman's first-half goal. Drew played all 90 minutes in goal, making three saves while allowing two goals. Transylvania finished with an 11-9 advantage in shots, putting nine attempts on goal compared to five for Mount Union. The Pioneers also held a 12-5 advantage in corner kicks.
After entering halftime trailing 2-1, Transylvania scored five unanswered goals in the second half to turn the one-goal deficit into a four-goal victory at Pat Deacon Stadium. Transylvania returns to action on Tuesday, September 15th, as they travel to Midway for a 1 p.m. match up.
