WILLIAMSBURG, VA. — The Transylvania University men's golf team put together a strong opening day Monday at the NCAA Division III Fall Preview, completing 36 holes at Kingsmill Resort's River Course against a field featuring many of the top programs in the country.
The Pioneers followed an opening-round 288 (+4) with a 285 (+1) in the afternoon, improving by three shots in Round 2 to finish the day at 573 (+5) and in 10th place heading into Tuesday's final round.
Sophomore Andy Steed (Wilmington, Ohio) continued his outstanding start to the season, leading Transylvania with rounds of 69 and 68 for a 36-hole total of 137 (-5). Steed sits tied for ninth individually entering the final 18 holes.
Steed opened the championship with a 2-under 69 before going one better in the afternoon with a 3-under 68. His second round included matching 34s on the front and back nine, as he continued his strong play following his individual championship at the Gate City Invitational last week.
Transylvania received solid contributions throughout the lineup. Ty Ruttinger opened with an even-par 71 before shooting 73 in Round 2 for a two-round total of 144 (+2). Carter Denton bounced back from a first-round 75 with a 70 (-1) in the afternoon, while Seth Hickerson followed a 75 with an even-par 71.
Hank Shick rounded out the Pioneer lineup with rounds of 73 and 78.
Transylvania — 36-Hole Results
The Pioneers' 285 in the second round helped Transylvania move up a spot in the team standings. Transylvania enters Tuesday at +5, five shots behind a tie for eighth and within striking distance of several teams ahead of it.
Huntingdon set the pace on Monday with an impressive 25-under-par total, followed by Kenyon at -17, Illinois Wesleyan at -12, Emory at -11 and Carnegie Mellon at -6. Transylvania sits 10th at +5, three shots behind seventh-place Methodist.
The NCAA Fall Preview provides teams an early look at the course and championship environment ahead of the NCAA Division III Championships. For Transylvania, Monday provided another opportunity to test itself against a deep national field and build on its strong early-season schedule.
The championship concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes at Kingsmill Resort's River Course.
