LEXINGTON, KY — Transylvania University men's soccer battled Wittenberg University to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at Pat Deacon Stadium. The result moved the Pioneers to 3-2-2 on the season.
Transylvania struck first in the 17th minute when Joany Chavez found the back of the net at 16:04 to give the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Chavez's lone shot on goal in the match.
The Pioneers carried the advantage into halftime after controlling much of the offensive pressure in the opening 45 minutes. Transylvania outshot Wittenberg 7-3 in the first half and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Wittenberg found the equalizer in the 76th minute when Luke Garza scored at 75:44 to make it 1-1. Transylvania responded by generating several opportunities over the closing minutes, including shots from Gus Dickman and Stone Work before Chavez struck the post in the 85th minute.
The Pioneers finished with a 16-7 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on goal. Dickman and Work each recorded four shots and two shots on goal, while McKay Wheatley finished with two shots, both on target. Transylvania also generated 11 corner kicks compared to six for Wittenberg.
Wittenberg goalkeeper Peter Adams finished with six saves as Transylvania continued to create chances throughout the match. The Tigers were reduced to 10 players following a red card to Brendon Raggiunti at 87:57, but the Pioneers were unable to find the deciding goal in the final minutes.
