FRANKLIN, Ind. - Transylvania senior forward Brian Williams (Lexington, Ky.) tallied a hat trick Saturday with three goals, leading the Pioneers to a 5-0 win over Franklin in Heartland Conference men's soccer play.
Transy is 12-2-2 overall, 6-0-1 HCAC, after winning its fifth straight match. The Grizzlies are 7-5-3, 4-1-2 in league action. Franklin came into the contest tied with Anderson, a half-game behind the Pioneers in the HCAC race.
Williams put Transy on the board first with his seventh goal of the year in the fifth minute.Jake Ruckman (Monroe, Ohio) converted a pass from Zach Lange (Florence, Ky.) in the 19th minute to make it 2-0. Williams scored again off an assist by Christian King at the 30:09 mark to set the halftime margin at 3-0.
Williams' ninth goal of the year came at the 71:59 mark as the result of an Ethan Collins (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) assist. Tyler Crombie (Frankfort, Ky.) capped the scoring six minutes later, setting the final score.
Alex Schmitt (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) started in goal for Transy and had two saves in 80 minutes.J.D. Lester (Madisonville, Ky.) finished the game for the Pioneers, who had a 13-8 edge in shots, but trailed 5-3 in corner kicks. Franklin was called for 21 fouls in the game, including three yellow cards, to 12 and one for the Pioneers.
Transy is back in action on Tuesday when the Pioneers hit the road to take on Mt. St. Joseph at 7 p.m. The final regular season contest comes next Saturday when Transy hosts Anderson at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
