LEXINGTON, Ky. - Transylvania claimed its first Heartland Conference regular season title in three years Saturday with a 1-0 overtime decision over Anderson in a first-place showdown at Thomas Field.
Transy is 14-2-2 overall, 8-0-1 HCAC, after winning its seventh straight match, while the Ravens are 9-5-5, 6-1-2 in the league. The winner earned the HCAC regular season crown and will host the league's semi-final and championship contest.
Anderson was called for a foul in the 20-yard box 5:56 into overtime and Zach Lange (Florence, Ky.) found the left corner of the goal to provide the only scoring in the contest. It was his fourth score of the season.
Transy had 12 shots in the game to just four for An derson, including a 7-2 edge in attempts on goal. Pioneer keeper Alex Schmitt (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had two saves. Transy also took six corners to four for the Ravens.
It was also Senior Day for five Pioneers making their final regular season appearances at Thomas Field: Brian Williams, Jordan Downey, Zach Lange, Kevin Jones, and Kevin Jordan.
Transy will play the HCAC's No. 4 team, Manchester, in one HCAC tourney semifinal game on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Anderson hosts No. 3 Franklin in the other semifinal.
The finals will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers last regular season championship came in 2007, but Transy did win the HCAC tourney last year, advancing to the round of eight in the NCAA Division III Championships.
