Engineers pull away late in 67-56 win

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Rose-Hulman pulled away late Saturday, posting a 67-56 win over Transylvania in men's Heartland Conference basketball action.

Transy is 13-6 overall, 7-5 HCAC, as its three-game win streak came to an end. The Engineers are 13-6, 7-5 in league play.

The Pioneers got off to a quick start, grabbing a 10-2 lead and forcing an early Rose-Hulman timeout after Taylor Botkin (Lexington, Ky.)'s three at the 14:25 mark. But the Engineers rallied, pulling ahead 17-15 with 7:01 to go before intermission.

Rose-Hulman led by one, 22-21, at the half. Transy hit 33 percent of its field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes compared to 38 percent for the Engineers. The Pioneers also out-rebounded Rose-Hulman in the period, 22-14.

Botkin's eight points paced the Pioneers while Ethan Spurlin (Stanford, Ky.) added six points and five rebounds. Blake Knotts led the Engineers with six points.

The Pioneers also started the second half on a good note, grabbing a 29-25 lead on two Chris Owens (Maysville, Ky.)free throws. The visitors still led by three, 36-33, on a Spurlin bucket with 11 minutes to go. But the Engineers went on a 20-6 spurt for a 53-42 advantage with just over four minutes left on the clock.

Rose-Hulman led by as many as 13 points in the late going.

Spurlin led the Pioneers with 11 points while Botkin and Meyer added 10 each.  Owens had six points and six boards. Knotts had 21 points and six rebounds for Rose-Hulman, which shot 48 percent from the field to 33 percent for the Pioneers.

Scott Bauman (Lexington, Ky.) had nine points, including seven of eight from the free throw line.

Transy was just four of 25 from three-point range while the Engineers converted seven of 16 from long range. Rose-Hulman was 20 of 33 from the free throw line while Transy took 19 free throws and made 12. Transy had a 38-34 edge in rebounding.

Transy is back on the road on Wednesday, traveling to Franklin for a 7:30 p.m. HCAC contest.
