Transy men claim HCAC crown

Box Score ANDERSON, Ind. - Transylvania claimed its second straight Heartland Conference men's soccer regular season championship Saturday with a 1-0 win over Anderson.

The victory gives coach Brandon Bowman's team an overall record of 11-4-3, 8-0-1 in HCAC play. It is also the second year in a row that the Pioneers have been undefeated in HCAC matches, a streak that reaches back to September 2009.

Christian King's eighth goal of the year was the winner for the Pioneers. Kyle Newman got the assist.

The victory gives Transy the top seed in next week's HCAC tournament, with Rose-Hulman (8-1) the No. 2 seed. Also in the tournament are Mt. St. Joseph (5-4) and Earlham (4-4-1).

The Pioneers will host the Quakers on Tuesday with the winners advancing to Saturday's HCAC Finals, to be held at the site of the highest remaining seed at 1 p.m. The winner gets the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Transy will be looking for its second straight berth in the NCAA Championship and its seventh in eight years.
